An upcoming Sound Spa — planning to heal is karma

“Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.” – Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, MD, Author of “The Healing Power of Sound: Recovery from Life-Threatening Illness using Sound, Voice, and Music”
“When we are in a state of health, we’re like an extraordinary orchestra that’s playing a wonderful symphony of the self. But what happens if the second violin player loses her sheet music? She begins to play out of tune, and pretty soon the entire string section sounds bad. Pretty soon, in fact, the entire orchestra is off. This is a metaphor for disease.” – ,,a Jonathan Goldman, Author of “Healing Sounds: The Power of Harmonics” and Director of the Sound Healers Organization
Vibration healing uses mechanically produced vibrations to attempt to treat various injuries and illnesses. It is a treatment that has been around for centuries. Vibration healing is not widely accepted by many in the medical community, but in some cases it is making its way into main stream medicine.
The ancient Greeks used vibration to treat symptoms of arthritis and bruising. This was originally accomplished by the physician having an assistant hold a board over the affected area, while the physician sawed the board. Horse rides were later used, and eventually a special cart with uneven wheels was made so the patient would experience more vibration.
“Early in the 19th century, mechanical devices were invented to deliver vibration to the body. A physician held the device to the affected area or slowly moved it over the entire body, and a crank was simultaneously turned on the device. This vibration healing was used to treat crippling disorders such as arthritis, nervous disorders, and aided in digestion and circulation.

The neuro-anatomy of Sound Therapy
Sound Therapy stimulates the ear by presenting it with constantly alternating sounds of high and low tone, within the complex structure of classical music. Stimulation via the sensory pathways re-maps the brain, improving the way we understand and process sound. The brain, in turn, sends signals back to the ear to improve its function. One theory suggests that this feedback loop results in better performance of the middle ear muscles and of the tiny, hair-like receptor cells in the inner ear.
As the ear becomes open and receptive to high frequency sounds these are then passed on to the brain. Research has shown that brain function is improved through high frequency sound. There is an increase in blood flow to certain centres along with increased electrical activity. The results observed in Sound Therapy listeners include increased energy, reduced fatigue with improved focus and creativity, a reduction in the need for sleep, and an almost permanent state of peace and relaxation.
Healing from within … cellularly …..

Because we hear not only with the ears, but the skin and bones as well, the vibrational effects and the harmonic sounds can influence every aspect of the body including brain states. Their effect on tissue cells, and neural pathways of the brain are just being understood. In Eastern medical circles, illness is looked at being 75 percent mental, which is a complete opposite of how illness is looked at in this country. For the sake of argument then, if illness is 75 percent mental, then any agent that can affect the nervous system, brain waves, blood circulation, heart rate, respiration, etc., would greatly influence the mind. Through this action, the mind can then influence the patient’s well being, encouraging a positive outlook, fortifying resolve, and regulating bodily functions; including the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Is it any wonder, that when patients facing life threatening illnesses who are hospitalized, receive mental health counseling? Singing Bowls are capable ( by trained practitioners ) of influencing the Autonomic Nervous System, particularly the Parasympathetic Nervous System which is our ‘ rest and digest ‘ response, in contrast to the ‘ fight or flight ‘ response. Stimulation of the PNS decreases blood pressure, aids digestion, helps to metabolite sugar ( diabetes issues ), and can rest the mind to the point where a deeper spiritual awareness can manifest. Dissonance studies using Singing Bowls, has shown to be effective to children with ADD and ADHD. Certain techniques using Singing Bowls can produce magnetic effects which have been shown in clinical studies to increase tissue phosphorylization, which aids in fibroblast proliferation and the healing of tissue. Magnetics increases the level of alkaline phosphatase at fracture sites, which expedites healing of fractures. It affects the membranes of red blood cells, decreasing rouleaux formation and increasing oxygenation of tissue.

Tibetan Singing Bowls ) have evolved as one of the most popular tools used in sound therapies. Their uses, traditionally from the countries they originate from, varies from culture to culture. For example, in the Himalayan regions, they are used by shamans and clergy from the Buddhist, Bon, and Sufi communities. In India, they are used more as a meditational aide, and only recently, as a sound therapy tool, due to their popularity in the West. Their use for healing in the Himalayas, is much older than their Indian counterparts, contrary to what is told on the internet. Generally, in Nepal for example, Singing Bowls are not placed directly on the body, but over the past decade, they have adopted this practice from the West. Sound is an ancient study regarding transformation in the East, and predates western concepts by centuries. Oral traditions can date back nearly 18,000 years, and written transcripts have been found in Turkey, and other countries extending all the way to

Mongolia, composed over 1,000 years ago. Singing Bowls are also used in China, Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, and Kashmir as Temple instruments. And we see the use of Singing Bowls in the cultures of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Bhutan.

It has only been in the last 2 decades that a small number of controlled medical studies in this country, have looked at Singing Bowls as a therapy. The environment of healing with these instruments is generally practiced by amateurs who believe that just by hitting a bowl, they are somewhat qualified as a medical practitioner. This is nothing more than an illusion on their part, and short changes the efforts by others who have sought out teachers who have studied abroad in the Himalayas or Europe. It is not the mere hitting of a Singing Bowl that initiates transformation, but the application of Skillful Means in conjunction with the Singing Bowls. A trained Singing Bowl practitioner is not just striking the bowl, but initiating an intentional effort that has been handed down through centuries of Oral Traditions. This dynamic of Sound, Vibration, and Skillful Methods can have a direct effect on people who have physical and mental health concerns. Singing Bowl therapy is an excellent compliment to traditional therapies, including Naturopathic and Holistic applications. ( Please note, Singing Bowls did not originate in Tibet, and very few were historically made there. So anyone who refers to them as Tibetan in origin, is either misinformed or is using misleading information insinuating esoteric implications. The term ‘ Tibetan Singing Bowl ‘ is simply the result of ” branding ” or semiotics ).

The path – the life –  what is light ?

Meditation has surged in popularity in recent years, from a fringe interest to a mainstream trend championed by therapists, scientists and celebrities. As part of this shift, misconceptions and dismissals have given way to the emerging recognition of meditation as a science. There are, however, those who would challenge this view. As both a scientist and a meditator, I feel a duty to respond.

In doing so, I must first acknowledge the huge number of activities commonly referred to as meditation. Many of those activities are not in any sense scientific. However, I will argue that some meditation practices, including the method I describe in “The Mind Illuminated” and other practices within the Buddhist tradition, do qualify as science. I will confine my discussion to those practices.

We can define science as the systematic study of the natural world through observation and experiment, yielding an organized body of knowledge on a particular subject. The human mind is undeniably a suitable subject for scientific study, and one purpose of meditation is careful observation of one’s own mind. This observation reveals consistent patterns that meditators share with one another and with teachers who direct their practice. Master meditators weigh these observations against their own experience and knowledge passed down from previous generations of meditation masters, thereby generating models of the mind. Over thousands of years, meditators have tested, refined and reworked their models of the mind based on new insights as later generations developed new meditative techniques. Thus, over time, an organized body of knowledge has accumulated describing the nature and behavior of the mind at a very fine level of resolution. This is one sense in which certain forms of meditation qualify as science.

However, meditation is not simply passive observation, nor could it be, since the very act of observation is itself an activity of mind. Rather the meditator intentionally employs attention, awareness and other mental faculties in a variety of ways to better understand the functional behavior of the mind. (The effect of observation on the thing observed is not different than what occurs in quantum physics.) Precisely how these mental faculties are used in the investigation of the mind is subject to modification that can increase or decrease the efficacy of this endeavor. Thus meditation is also technology.

In the history of meditation practices that qualify as scientific, meditation masters have used models of the mind generated by meditation to modify meditation techniques for increased efficacy. Such modifications can be viewed as hypotheses, and their implementation as experiments. When these modifications are subsequently preserved because they are effective, the experimental results have passed the tests of replicability and falsifiability required by the scientific method. The picture of meditation as science is complete. The hypotheses generated in response to observation and analysis have been tested, validated and incorporated into the expanding body of knowledge. Such meditation practices are justifiably described as an evolving science, and the laboratory in which this science is carried out is the mind.
